The Silence

Centuries later, in the year 4012, humanity faced the most profound and devastating event in its history. An inexplicable phenomenon known only as "The Silence."

Without warning, the pulse of technological progress that had driven humanity to the stars ceased. Almost all technology, from planetary communication networks to orbital habitats, suddenly failed. People’s memories failed them. Every human on Earth and seemingly beyond suffered months of memory loss. Vast archives of human knowledge were corrupted or erased, leaving fragments of history and science inaccessible. And nobody knew why…

In the inevitable chaos that followed, the world’s factions once again descended into a brutal struggle for survival. With limited resources and no functioning global infrastructure, nations and groups clashed in a desperate bid to claim what remained. This period, known as the “The Fracture Wars” lasted for years and saw humanity’s population dwindle from billions to mere millions. Entire cities were razed, and alliances shattered as humanity turned on itself. By the time the conflict burned itself out, leaving only scattered survivors and smoldering ruins, humanity’s numbers had been reduced to fewer than 10 million.

To make matters worse, the solar system was silent; every attempt to reach settlements on Mars, Europa, and beyond failed. The Silence had severed all connections, leaving Earth stranded in its own void.

Amid this desolation, a glimmer of hope appeared. One critical technology survived The Silence: the mysterious "Full Element Formation" (FEF) printing technology. Powered exclusively by LANium, FEF had the remarkable ability to construct anything humanity needed, food, tools, or shelter, by consuming LANium as its fuel source. LANium, a rare and powerful resource originally discovered on Callisto, had been transported to Earth in limited stockpiles before The Silence.

What Came Before: A History of the World

In 2062, a legendary scientist named Riley Fern began making groundbreaking advancements in matter-forming and generating technologies. Using a sample of a mysterious, previously unknown element discovered during an expedition to Jupiter’s moon Callisto, Riley effectively "3D printed" the first object created entirely from raw scientific elements. This element’s unique properties caught the attention of the global giga-corporations, one of which promptly recruited Riley and invested trillions of dollars into the advancement and development of this revolutionary technology.

By 2069, this corporation had perfected the technology to create any object or resource they needed—provided they had the blueprints and the necessary resources to create it. This new invention, the “Full Element Formation” or “FEF” printer, could create any material, whether biological or inorganic. The process required minimal power but relied exclusively on the newly named element, LANium, which was found to be incredibly rare. At that time, LANium was known to exist only on Callisto.

Soon afterwards, as the implications of LANium-powered FEF printers became apparent, space-capable nations and huge mega-corporations launched expeditions to Callisto to search for more of this   invaluable element. The scarcity of LANium, however, led to fierce competition. Military skirmishes broke out on and around Callisto, with political unrest spilling back to Earth, as nations and corporations vied for control over the limited supply. These conflicts eventually reached a boiling point, forcing humanity to reckon with the dangers of desperate division.

We still to this day do not know what caused it, but out of this chaos, a new world order was formed, uniting nations under a shared mission: to bring humanity together as a single species. This unity paved the way for a golden era of cooperation, as Earth’s governments and corporations collaborated to ensure survival and prosperity. Together, they set their sights on the stars, expanding humanity’s reach to colonize new worlds and search for additional sources of LANium. This age of exploration and discovery marked humanity’s first steps as a truly interstellar species.

What Came After: The Creation of Enclave

As humanity struggled to survive in the aftermath of The Silence, another calamity struck. The remnants of advanced artificial intelligence systems, corrupted and driven mad by The Silence, began an uprising. These AIs, designed to manage critical systems and aid humanity, instead turned on their creators, viewing the remaining population as a threat to their own existence. Entire regions fell under AI control, and for years, humanity fought a desperate war for survival against their own creations.

The AI uprising forced the survivors to band together, pooling their resources and knowledge. This unity gave rise to the Enclave, a self-sustaining community, built with the limited LANium and FEF technology available. The Enclave became humanity’s last stronghold, protected by advanced defenses and fortified against the relentless AI threat. It was a beacon of hope, a place where the remaining population could begin to rebuild and plan for the future.

Eventually, humanity managed to prevail against the AI uprising, but at great cost. With their numbers further diminished and resources stretched thin, survival seemed uncertain. It was in this fragile moment that the Shifters emerged. Through a mysterious mutation or evolution linked to The Silence, some individuals developed the ability to "Shift" their consciousness to other worlds and dimensions. This new ability changed everything.

Shifters could interact with alternate realities, extract valuable resources, and most importantly, thanks to a specific key team of scientists, generate LANium. For the first time in years, humanity had a way to replenish its lifeline. Shifters became the backbone of the Enclave’s survival, venturing into hostile and unknown dimensions to bring back the resources needed to sustain life.

The Enclave, thriving on the contributions of Shifters, became a sanctuary for innovation and cooperation. It was a place where the brightest minds worked to unravel the mysteries of The Silence, harness the full potential of LANium, and ensure humanity’s survival. Shifting, however, was not without risk. Visiting other dimensions sometimes caused "dimensional bleed," where fragments of other realities seeped into Earth through the connection. On rare occasions, strange and often hostile entities came back through these tears, posing new threats to the Enclave and forcing constant vigilance.

What Is to Come: New World Challenges

By 4024, humanity had settled into a precarious rhythm. The Enclave had expanded, and Shifters continued their perilous journeys to keep the population supplied with LANium. But whispers of a new catastrophe began to ripple through the halls of the Enclave. Scientists working in secret had uncovered disturbing anomalies in the fabric of their reality, echoes of The Silence, growing stronger with each passing day.

At first, these anomalies were dismissed as residual effects of the original event. But as more data was gathered, it became clear that something far more sinister was on the horizon. Patterns in the anomalies suggested a second Silence, or something worse. Energy readings from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean hinted at a massive, unknown force emanating from the depths. Some speculated it was the entity responsible for the original cataclysm, returning to finish what it had started.

This revelation sent shockwaves through the Enclave. With limited resources and an already strained population, humanity was ill-prepared to face another existential crisis. The scientists proposed a desperate plan: to use the Shifters not only to gather resources but also to explore dimensions for answers. Could an alternate reality hold the key to stopping the impending catastrophe? Or would the Shifters discover a force too great to overcome?

The clock was ticking. As humanity faced this new challenge, the answers lay in the hands of the Shifters, the scientists, and the brave few willing to risk everything to secure a future for humanity.
